Carbon Footprint Calculator

Carbon Footprint Calculator

To accurately record and control CO₂e emissions on campus, NTUA is developing a special computing tool. This software:

  • It incorporates an extensive database with all the parameters related to the calculation of the carbon footprint. Examples include the global warming potential (GWP) of greenhouse gases, the net calorific value and density of fuels, and the emission factors proposed by the IPCC and the National Inventory Report (NIR).
  • It collects primary data on activities. Examples include electricity and fuel consumption, refrigerant leaks and semi-processed data from questionnaire responses.
  • It calculates total CO2e emissions and breaks them down into more than 2,300 results, based on the source, greenhouse gas, and facility from which they arise.
  • Analyzes results in 3 dynamic emission diagrams with the ability to apply filters.
  • It outputs automated reporting with easy-to-use and user-friendly formatting, enhancing sustainable decision-making.

This accurate record helps the Foundation identify areas where improvements can be made to reduce emissions, such as upgrading facilities for greater energy efficiency or encouraging the use of bicycles and public transportation. Thus, the NTUA can design more targeted sustainability policies, improving its ecological footprint.

Results

The results of the tool reveal a significant 20% reduction in NTUA emissions compared to the base year. Specifically, from 7,389 tCO₂e in 2023, the institution managed to reduce emissions to 5,778tCO₂e in 2024, reflecting its efforts for sustainable development. This significant improvement is mainly due to the reduction in electricity and natural gas heating consumption, as well as the increased integration of RES in the country’s energy mix.
