Summary of actions to enhance sustainable development at NTUA

NTUA sustainable development actions need to be stepped up in the future, through a multidisciplinary approach to address the challenges of scientific progress and technological development in a sustainable context.

The overall actions of NTUA, as presented in detail above, are based on eight main pillars:

  • Integrating sustainability into the educational process
  • Energy Management and CO₂ Emission Reduction
  • Design and expansion of sustainable infrastructure
  • Water Resources and Waste Management
  • Sustainable Transportation
  • Circular Economy and Procurement
  • Raising awareness and active participation of the Community
  • Evaluation using performance indicators and Progress Tracking

More specifically, NTUA aims to use various actions to scale up the green transition, including the following:

  • Encourage interdisciplinary research on sustainability and seek funding tools for doctoral studies in topics directly related to the SDG objectives
  • Increasing the sustainable infrastructure of the National Technical University of Athens, renovating the building infrastructure of the National Technical University of Athens and preventing the negative impacts of climate change
  • Sustainable design and restoration of outdoor spaces to mitigate the effects of climate change
  • Promoting the principles of open access, open data, open source and citizen science
  • Presentation of research activities and results in various extroversion actions to raise community awareness on sustainability issues.
  • Strengthening of NTUA synergies with institutions that can transfer the knowledge collected from NTUA practices to wider social groups
  • Highlight the multifaceted aspects of sustainable development by designing more cross-departmental courses with an emphasis on sustainability
  • Increasing sustainability content in all existing Specialized Masters and organizing new postgraduate programs specifically focused on sustainability
  • Reduction of NTUA primary energy consumption, including through the adoption of effective management practices and change of energy behavior of users
  • Increase of the fraction of renewable energy sources in the energy mix of the National Technical University of Athens, both by increasing the installed capacity and by appropriate storage systems and smart management of the produced sustainable energy
  • Enhancing accessibility to NTUA facilities by maximizing the use of public transport
  • Reduction of the amount of waste generated by the University and strengthening of the waste collection and sorting system
  • Optimization of water resources management within NTUA

As can be deduced from the above, the promotion of sustainable development at NTUA requires multidimensional interventions and cooperation of all parts of the academic community. While the challenges are substantial, through appropriate strategies and targeted actions, NTUA can be an example of good practice and contribute decisively to shaping a sustainable future.
