Challenges
Sustainable development is undoubtedly an important challenge of the modern era for the National Technical University of Athens, which as an institution of knowledge and innovation, has a decisive role in its promotion and awareness of society. However, the implementation of sustainable practices is accompanied by several obstacles, summarized in the following four main axes:
The proposals that have also been referred to in the individual sections, such as the energy upgrade of buildings, the utilization of renewable energy sources, the systematic management of waste and the reduction of the environmental footprint of transport, may contain a set of quite costly interventions, resulting in systemic risks in the course of the implementation of the green transition planning and the achievement of related goals, ensuring adequate financial resources.
The green transition often requires a redefinition of some established practices by the community, which can create revulsion from the people involved. Ensuring a smooth transition requires a comprehensive change of mindset and relevant training.
The management of natural resources and waste is a major challenge as it requires a more systematic approach, from the level of recording and estimating the current situation to the implementation of a holistic plan for the sustainable management of natural resources.
