Equipment Management & Reuse programs

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) has started to develop equipment reuse and management programs that are part of its overall strategy to promote sustainability and the circular economy. These programs allow for efficient use of resources and help reduce the environmental impact of the institution.

For the success of these programs, NTUA has implemented several practices:

A central warehouse has been created where furniture, electronic devices and other equipment that are no longer needed are collected. These items will be recorded and potentially can be offered either free of charge or at a low cost to other units of the institution. In addition, other equipment that cannot be reused will be recycled through the recycling company APPLIANCE RECYCLING S.A. Moreover at the school of Architecture, modeling materials from older student projects are disassembled and re distributed to students

NTUA promotes the regular maintenance and repair of equipment, ensuring its shelf life and reuse.

Equipment that is not absorbed internally can be given to schools, non-profit organizations or social enterprises, thus promoting social solidarity and the reuse of materials.

Through the above programs, NTUA will develop an equipment management system that will monitor the life cycle of each significant asset. A database will be created through which it will be known when a species is in surplus and can be transferred elsewhere.

Therefore, with the above measures, NTUA can adopt a “zero waste” approach in terms of its equipment and materials. Good practices from European universities show that the circular economy in practice – from procurement policy to reuse – is not only feasible, but also brings significant benefits: reducing costs, limiting environmental impact, improving the image of the institution and creating a culture of responsibility for students who will transfer these values to society as well.

Through these initiatives, NTUA not only enhances its economic sustainability and reduces its environmental footprint, but also sets a positive example for society, promoting a culture of sustainability and responsibility.
