Determination of KPIs to achieve sustainability goals

Universities are key performers in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals and tackling the climate crisis. To evaluate a university’s contribution to these goals, the use of Key Performance Indicators is required. These indicators are measurable variables that demonstrate the achievement of specific targets, such as the reduction of CO₂ emissions, recycling rates and the number of modules for sustainability, thus allowing for systematic monitoring and comparison of progress over time.

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) can use KPIs to link its actions to the global Sustainable Development Goals and identify both areas of success and needs for improvement. Specifically, as a member of the European University Alliance EULiST, NTUA is committed to integrating KPIs into its strategy, collaborating with other European universities to exchange best practices and implement sustainability policies in education, research and operation. The existence of defined KPIs allows for effective alignment and enables NTUA to act as a model of excellence, while benefiting from the experiences and innovations of its partners.

At the same time, KPIs contribute significantly to the transparency of NTUA. Through the regular recording and publication of indicators, as provided for by the NTUA Sustainable Development Plan, the academic community and stakeholders can monitor progress towards the achievement of the goals. This strengthens the institution’s accountability, encourages higher performance and makes it clear what further actions are needed to improve performance on sustainability goals.
